Confessions of a Sign Guy:

How I Accidentally Started Topeka's Favorite Sign Shop

I’m Erik Knox, and I blame my wife for all of this.

Back in 2011, she accepted a position at the VA Medical Center in Topeka. I saw my opportunity and made a deal: “If we move, I finally get to start that sign business I’ve been obsessing about.”

Little did she know she was unleashing a sign-making monster on an unsuspecting city.

The First Sign of Trouble:

A Printer Too Big for Its Britches

Our neighbors must have thought we were insane. Delivery trucks, mysterious large packages, and yes—that time we slightly modified our garage wall to fit an industrial printer. (Home improvement, right?)

That garage was our world headquarters, complete with a vinyl cutter, laminator, and the aforementioned wall-busting printer wedged between Christmas decorations and lawn equipment.

"I Just Need One Vehicle Wrap"

(Said Everyone, Ever)

Funny thing about good work—people notice. And they tell friends.

One vehicle wrap led to another. Then came the banners. Then the storefront signs. Suddenly I was choosing between finishing orders and attending barbecues (the signs usually won).

Within months, our garage operation had outgrown both its space and the patience of our neighbors. We moved to our first commercial location, and just a year later, needed an even bigger space.

By 2018, what started as a one-man operation had grown into a team of talented designers, fabricators, and installers with a building to call our own. Our equipment collection grew from that single printer to a full production facility capable of handling everything from custom decals to illuminated storefront signs.

Why Clients Keep Coming Back

The whole Knox team went above and beyond our expectations with the work they have done for us. I believe they are second to none in their industry. They have done our signs, windows, koozies, pens, cups, business cards and recreated our logo.

Signs That Work While You Sleep

(And Some That Light Up Too)

"Can You Handle a Project This Big?"

(Spoiler: Absolutely)

Today, we work with businesses of all sizes—from the coffee shop down the street to regional chains like Short Stop, where we’re currently updating over 20 locations with new signage, canopies, and interior elements.

As we plan our move to an 18,000 square foot facility in the next two years, I’m excited about the possibilities—not just for growth, but for how we can serve our clients even better with expanded capabilities and faster turnaround times.
